Coast Guard, partners complete Operation Koa Kai off the Island of Hawaii

HONOLULU — The U.S. Coast Guard completed Operation Koa Kai, a comprehensive month-long maritime security and safety operation conducted throughout October off the Island of Hawaii.

Coast Guard continues oversight of ongoing response efforts at the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (WAPA) Randolph Harley Power Plant in St. Thomas, Nov. 1, 2023, following a diesel spill at the facility, Oct. 25, 2023. Coast Guard continues oversight of power plant diesel spill response in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

The Coast Guard continues oversight of ongoing response efforts at the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (WAPA) Randolph Harley Power Plant in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands Wednesday, following a diesel spill at the facility on Oct. 25, 2023. Media Availability: USA’s largest icebreaker to visit Charleston following Arctic deployment, interviews available

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The crew of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy is scheduled to participate in a media availability Friday during the ship's port call in Charleston. The Healy conducted an Arctic deployment to provide U.S. surface presence, high-latitude research in support of international cooperation, and engagements with Arctic partner nations. During the deployment, Healy conducted joint operations in the Barents Sea with the Norwegian Coast Guard, as well as joint operations with Danish and Icelandic sea services while operating in the North Atlantic. The cutter also hosted a science roundtable with researchers from the U.S., Norway, and other nations.

Coast Guard Academy recognizes Dr. James Chao with newly established award

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The U.S. Coast Guard Academy recently recognized Dr. James Chao as the first recipient of the newly established Scientæ Cedit Mare Award. Scientæ Cedit Mare is the motto of the Academy, and the latin phrase translates to “the sea yields to knowledge” which reflects the importance of knowledge and education in mastering the challenges of the sea.

Incident Command oversees refloat, relocation of Bonnie G in St. Thomas, USVI

Salvors successfully refloated the Bonnie G and towed the vessel to its current mooring location at the Crown Bay Sandfill dock in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Monday. “We commend all of the Coast Guard, federal, and local response agency crews as well as the National Response Corp., Playland Marine LLC and DonJon-SMIT, Inc. for their efforts in achieving a successful response,” said Lt. Cmdr. Jennifer Flowers, Coast Guard Bonnie G Response incident commander for the refloating operation. “This was a very complex incident, as the Bonnie G response endured twenty-six days with the vessel aground and two passing storms in the peak of hurricane season. We are appreciative of the cooperative efforts to protect the pristine waters of the U.S. Virgin Islands by safely removing this pollution threat and preventing major environmental impacts.”

Demonstrating Courage in the Face of Danger

Graduates of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy frequently find themselves in harm’s way serving the public and saving lives. It’s an accepted part of the job that comes with the service’s humanitarian mission. The Academy community celebrates the accomplishments of past graduates who have distinguished themselves and their alma mater during its annual Hall of Heroes ceremony.

Coast Guard, partner agencies respond to sunken vessel near Sitka, Alaska

The U.S. Coast Guard, Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, and Hanson Maritime are responding to a sunken vessel near Sitka that had no people on board.

The U.S. Coast Guard was on scene to provide timely assistance and support to the island nation of Vanuatu following the devastating impact of Tropical Cyclone Lola, Oct. 26, 2023. The Coast Guard received the request in the afternoon of Oct. 25 from the U.S. Embassy Port Moresby to support the Government of Vanuatu with post-storm overflight and assessment of ports and critical infrastructure following Tropical Cyclone Lola.
