Coast Guard terminates an illegal charter operating in the San Diego Bay

SAN DIEGO — Coast Guard terminates an illegal charter operating in the vicinity of the USS Midway in the San Diego Bay, on Oct. 6, 2023. A Coast Guard boarding team conducted a safety inspection of the vessel, which had 14 individuals on board, including 12 passengers for hire and two non-credentialed crew members.

Coast Guard launches formal investigation into schooner casualty

BOSTON – The Coast Guard has launched a formal investigation into the dismasting of the commercial passenger vessel Grace Bailey. The casualty aboard the schooner Grace Bailey killed one passenger, and injured three others. At 10 a.m., on Oct. 9, the Coast Guard responded to a schooner that had been dismasted, injuring four of the 33 people aboard approximately one mile east of Rockland Harbor. There were 27 passengers, and six crew aboard the Grace Bailey. A Coast Guard Station Rockland 47-foot Motor Lifeboat (MLB) crew launched to assist, and transferred a woman from the Grace Bailey to Rockland Harbor where she was transferred to awaiting EMS and pronounced deceased. “As a member of a lifesaving service, I am deeply saddened by this tragedy,” said Capt. Amy Florentino, Commander of Coast Guard Sector Northern New England. “The Coast Guard is committed to conducting a thorough investigation aimed at identifying casual factors that will prevent an accident like this from reoccurring.” Rear Adm. John Mauger, commander of the First Coast Guard District, ordered a formal investigation to determine causal factors that led to the incident and to identify any other information that can improve maritime safety in the future.

U.S. Coast Guard Forces Micronesia/Sector Guam sends delegation to Republic of Marshall Islands, assuming expanded role as primary facilitator of longstanding relationship

SANTA RITA, Guam — Capt. Nicholas Simmons, commander of U.S. Coast Guard Forces Micronesia/Sector Guam (CGFM/SG), led a delegation to the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), one of the three former U.S. trust territories under the Compact of Free Association (COFA) the week of Sept. 18, 2023. The visit underscores CGFM/SG's strengthened role as the primary facilitator of the cooperative relationship between the U.S. Coast Guard and the RMI, reinforcing longstanding ties. They will continue to hold a significant role in the regular Joint Committee Meetings.

Coast Guard responds to a medical emergency aboard the charter fishing vessel Legend 

VIDEO AVAILABLE: SAN DIEGO — Coast Guard Sector San Diego personnel respond to a medical emergency aboard a charter fishing vessel approximately 55 miles west of Point Loma, Thursday afternoon.  At approximately 1 p.m., Coast Guard Sector San Diego watchstanders received a distress call from the charter fishing vessel, Legend, reporting a medical emergency. A 79-year-old male passenger lost consciousness and fell, signs of a heart attack.
