UPDATE 3: Unified Command monitors, responds to Gulf oil incident

The Unified Command continues to monitor and respond to an oil discharge near the Main Pass Oil Gathering (MPOG) company's pipeline system, known as the MPOG 11015 incident, near Plaquemines Parish, southeast of New Orleans.

Coast Guard partners with local agencies to respond to sinking vessel, San Juan County

Crews from Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound, Washington Department of Ecology, and the Islands’ Oil Spill Association (IOSA) responded to the sinking of the 80-foot vessel El Capitan at West Sound Marina on Orcas Island, Saturday, Nov. 18. Watchstanders at Sector Puget Sound command center received notification Nov. 18 from the West Sound Marina that the El Capitan was rapidly sinking. A sheen was observed emitting from the vessel when it sank next to the pier in approximately 30-feet of water.

U.S. Coast Guard enhances partnership and security commitments with the Republic of Palau during recent Joint Committee Meeting alongside Joint Region Marianas

SANTA RITA, Guam — In an enduring commitment to regional stability and cooperative security, U.S. Coast Guard Forces Micronesia/Sector Guam personnel participated in a bilateral Joint Committee Meeting (JCM) with the Republic of Palau, alongside U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) and the U.S. Department of State representatives in Palau from Nov. 14 to17, 2023. The JCM, spearheaded by Rear Adm. Gregory Huffman and President Surangel Whipps Jr., with support from U.S. Ambassador to Palau, Joel Ehrendreich underscored the significance of the Compact of Free Association (COFA) in fostering mutual defense and security strategies.

CLEVELAND — Coast Guard Sectors Buffalo and Sault Ste. Marie are scheduled to change names to Sectors Eastern Great Lakes and Northern Great Lakes, respectively, on Dec. 1, 2023.

Coast Guard suspends search for 54-year-old male near Half Moon Bay

The Coast Guard suspended its search for a 54-year-old male near Half Moon Bay after a 22-hour search that began at about 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The man reportedly was swept into the ocean by a wave on Martins Beach that also swept out a 5-year-old girl who was recovered by San Mateo County Fire personnel. The girl was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced deceased. Coast Guard search crews from Air Station San Francisco, Station Golden Gate, and Coast Guard Cutter Hawksbill searched a combined eight search pattern sorties covering 100 square miles.

Coast Guard, CBP units apprehend 12 stowaway migrants during tug and barge transit into San Juan Harbor

Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection partners apprehended 12 stowaway migrants Saturday, during the escort of the tugboat Sarah Dann that was towing a barge into San Juan Harbor, Puerto Rico. “I cannot emphasize enough just how dangerous it is to have stowaways board or jump from a moving barge,” said Capt. Robert M. Pirone, Sector San Juan acting commander.  “The quick response and close collaboration of all responding Coast Guard and partner agency units prevented a tragic outcome and accounted for the safety of all the stowaways in this case.”

Coast Guard searching for 54-year-old male near Half Moon Bay

A Coast Guard aircrew and boat crew are searching for a 54-year-old male off the coast of Martins Beach in Half Moon Bay, California. The man and a 5-year-old girl were reportedly swept off the beach by a wave, but the girl was recovered at Martins Beach by San Mateo County Fire personnel and transported to a nearby hospital.

Coast Guard Cutter Legare returns home to Virginia following a 73-day deployment

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The crew of Coast Guard Cutter Legare (WMEC 912) returned home to Portsmouth, Friday, concluding a nearly 10-week deployment to the Windward Passage and the South Florida Straits. Additionally, Legare supported the Coast Guard’s Eighth District as the offshore command and control cutter in response to an oil discharge in the Gulf of Mexico.

Coast Guard urges beach safety during King Tides

All beachgoers in the Pacific Northwest are encouraged to exercise heightened caution for sneaker waves during the upcoming King Tides this weekend and for the remainder of the winter. The Coast Guard and National Weather Service are urging the public who visit coastal beaches during King Tides to be on alert for dangerous surf and potentially fatal sneaker waves.
