Coast Guard returns 33 migrants to the Dominican Republic, following vessel interdiction in the Mona Passage

The Coast Guard returned 33 migrants to the Dominican Republic, Saturday, following the interdiction of a migrant vessel in the Mona Passage near Puerto Rico. The interdiction is the result of ongoing local and federal multi-agency efforts in support of the Caribbean Border Interagency Group (CBIG). Three Dominican men interdicted in this voyage are facing federal prosecution at the U.S. District Court in Puerto Rico on charges of attempted illegal re-entry into the United States under 8 U.S.C. 1326(b).

Charges filed against vessel operator for illegal trawling near Kodiak, Alaska

The State of Alaska filed criminal misdemeanor charges May 12 against a vessel operator for operating non-pelagic trawl gear within the Kodiak, Alaska, ground fish registration area. The trawl gear used in the area had attached to it chafing gear and chain rib lines suitable for fishing in contact with the seabed, all devices not authorized for legal pelagic trawl gear.

U.S. Coast Guard conducts search and rescue exercise with Japan Coast Guard near San Diego

The Coast Guard concluded a search and rescue exercise (SAREX) with the Japan Coast Guard training vessel Kojima off the coast of San Diego, Sunday. The SAREX is part of Operation Sapphire which was established through a memorandum of cooperation in 2022 between the U.S. and Japan Coast Guards as a perpetual operation to strengthen relationships, increase bilateral engagements, and focus on maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific.

NEWPORT, R.I. — The crew of the USCGC Campbell (WMEC 909) returned to their home port in Newport, Saturday, following a 59-day patrol to the South Florida Straits and Windward Passage.

Coast Guard repatriates, transfers 68 people to Cuba, Bahamas

MIAMI — Coast Guard crews repatriated 50 people to Cuba and transferred 18 people to the Bahamas, following three interdictions off the coasts of Florida and Bahamas, in the past week. “The Coast Guard and our federal partners maintain a continual presence with air and sea assets in the Florida Straits and Caribbean Sea,” said Lt. Connor Ives, Coast Guard District 7 response enforcement officer. “People attempting to migrate illegally into the U.S., will be interdicted, repatriated, or sent back to the country of origin.”

Title 42 termination does not alter maritime migration policies

MIAMI — The termination of Title 42 public health order does not alter the maritime migration policies, and the U.S. maritime borders remain closed. Title 42 never applied to migrants interdicted at sea. The Task Force is monitoring the situation to ensure misinformation among diaspora communities or disinformation spread by human smugglers does not encourage increased attempts to reach the United States by sea.
