Coast Guard Cutter Dependable returns home after 59-day patrol in the Florida Straits and Windward Passage

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The crew of Coast Guard Cutter Dependable (WMEC 626) returned to their home port in Virginia Beach, Saturday, following a 59-day maritime safety and security patrol in the Florida Straits and Windward Passage. Dependable and crew members deployed in support of Homeland Security Task Force-Southeast (HSTF-SE) and Operation Vigilant Sentry (OVS) while patrolling in the Coast Guard Seventh District’s area of operations. Dependable’s crew conducted illegal migration deterrence and interdiction operations while collaborating with other Coast Guard and interagency assets across the region to protect life at sea and secure U.S. maritime borders.

U.S. Coast Guard, Navy Helicopter Squadron execute critical medical evacuation of Filipino mariner offshore of Saipan

SANTA RITA, Guam — In a display of exceptional interagency cooperation, a commercial mariner in urgent need of medical care was safely evacuated to Guam on Feb. 9, 2024, thanks to the swift actions of the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy's Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25 (HSC-25). "This successful medical evacuation underscores the strong partnership between the U.S. Coast Guard, HSC-25, and Guam Fire Rescue. Our commitment to the safety of mariners in distress is unwavering, and today's mission exemplifies that dedication," said Cmdr. Greg Sickels, deputy commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Forces Micronesia/Sector Guam (CGFMSG), highlighting the seamless collaboration.

Coast Guard Academy Alum set to graduate from NASA Astronaut program

Astronaut Candidate Andre Douglas ‘08 is in the final stretch of more than two years of training to earn his wings from NASA and become eligible for spaceflight. Douglas will join two other CGA alums who served as astronauts, Bruce Melnick ’72 and Daniel Burbank ’85 who is currently a Professor of Practice in the Mechanical Engineering program at the Academy.

Responders conduct successful pollution training, supporting Guam's spill response readiness

SANTA RITA, Guam — Responders and the U.S. Coast Guard held a three-day oil spill response certification course required under the Code of Federal Regulations for First Responder Operations Level Training given at Cabras Marine Guam from Jan. 17 - 19, 2024, focused on operational requirements for responding to pollution spills, particularly with oil spill recovery organizations. "We had the opportunity to take part in and observe their strategy, and they successfully finished the exercise by showcasing their professional knowledge and response skills," stated Lt. j.g. Whip Blacklaw, chief of the Incident Management Division at U.S. Coast Guard Forces Micronesia/Sector Guam.
