US Coast Guard Cutter Eagle to depart on annual summer cruise

NEW LONDON, Conn. — U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle (WIX 327) is scheduled to depart Fort Trumbull in New London, Saturday, at 2:30 p.m. to begin the training vessel’s annual summer cruise. U.S. Coast Guard Academy cadets on board will have the unique and experiential learning opportunity of sailing aboard a tall ship, which provides them with their first introduction to life at sea and is a foundational experience in their leadership development journey toward becoming future officers in the Coast Guard. During the cruise, cadets take classes on numerous subjects that are key to life at sea, including navigation, seamanship, ship and boat maneuvering, line handling, sailing, first aid, weather patterns, damage control, engineering, career development, and more. They will stand their first watch, and assist with setting, dousing, and trimming the sails, often requiring trainees to climb the rigging, and push themselves outside of their comfort zones.

U.S. Coast Guard conducts spill response exercise with Supreme Petroleum Guam

PITI, Guam — On May 1, 2024, U.S. Coast Guard Forces Micronesia/Sector Guam personnel executed a Government-Initiated Unannounced Exercise (GIUE) at the Harbor of Refuge testing Supreme Petroleum, a key player in Guam's petroleum industry.  The drill, run and evaluated by personnel from the Guam-based U.S. Coast Guard Emergency Management and Force Readiness, Prevention, and Incident Management divisions, simulated an oil spill scenario to guarantee safety, appropriate notifications, and prompt response actions. The primary mission was to evaluate the facility's ability to execute response plans swiftly and efficiently under real-world conditions, which they met satisfactorily. "The significance of the National Preparedness for Response Program (PREP) highlights that facilities must follow different standards. These unannounced exercises are like pop quizzes for facilities, testing how they respond to oil discharges. Reflecting on the exercise, seeing how everyone knew what to do and jumped into action was impressive. They activated their plan efficiently, and it was great to witness," said Lt. Henry Dunphy, the chief of emergency management and force readiness at U.S. Coast Guard Forces Micronesia/Sector Guam.

Coast Guard conducts joint rescue with Nags Head Fire Rescue

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard assisted with the rescue of a 70-year-old male, Monday evening, near Nags Head, North Carolina. Nags Head Fire Rescue Fireboat 16 located and recovered the individual wearing a lifejacket, who was showing signs of severe hypothermia west of Jockey Ridge State Park, after a multi-agency search effort led by the Coast Guard. The man was transferred to awaiting emergency medical services and transported to Outer Banks Hospital.

Coast Guard repatriates 51 migrants to Dominican Republic following vessel interdiction near Puerto Rico

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Joseph Tezanos repatriated 51 migrants to Dominican Republic, Tuesday, following the interdiction of an unlawful, irregular migration attempt near Puerto Rico. The repatriated migrants were transferred to Dominican Republic Navy vessel off Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. One other migrant interdicted in the group remains in U.S. custody to face federal prosecution under 8 U.S. Code § 1324.

Eastern Caribbean Combined Coordination Group holds joint meetings to foster interagency coordination

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The Eastern Caribbean Combined Coordination Group (ECCG) held a meeting April 23-25, in San Juan, to discuss increasing coordination to unify action against illicit market-driven flows that include human trafficking, human smuggling, the export of arms and monetary instruments, environmental crimes, and the movement of illicit drugs within the Eastern Caribbean Joint Operating Area. Transnational Criminal Organizations conducting this sort of malign activity along the maritime approaches to the U.S. Southeast Maritime Border – threaten maritime security, the rule of law, and ultimately, regional stability.
