U.S. heavy icebreaker departs Australia, bound for Antarctica
SYDNEY — The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star (WAGB 10) and crew departed Sydney, Friday, to begin their journey across the Southern Ocean en route to Antarctica in support of Operation Deep Freeze 2025. While in Sydney, the crew hosted tours aboard the Polar Star for Consul General Christine Elder and guests from the U.S. Embassy.

Coast Guard building nation’s first Polar Security Cutter
The U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Navy Integrated Program Office received approval Dec. 19 to begin building the first Polar Security Cutter (PSC). The PSC marks the first heavy polar icebreaker to be built in the United States in more than five decades.
Coast Guard accepts ownership of commercially available polar icebreaker
The Coast Guard announced it accepted ownership of the motor vessel Aiviq, a 360-foot polar class 3-equivalent icebreaker, from an Edison Chouest Offshore subsidiary Friday. The vessel, acquired Dec. 20, will enhance U.S. operational presence in the Arctic and support Coast Guard missions while awaiting delivery of the Polar Security Cutter (PSC) class.

Search for missing swimmer ends after response authorities recover his body off Flamenco Beach in Culebra, Puerto Rico
Coast Guard and local emergency response authorities ended the search for a missing swimmer after local responders located and recovered his body off Flamenco Beach in Culebra, Puerto Rico, Friday. Recovered deceased is Brandon Smith, a U.S. citizen in his sixties, from Connecticut residing in Culebra, after local emergency responders using a drone located the swimmer’s body, approximately one nautical mile offshore from Flamenco Beach.

U.S. Coast Guard announces availability for the Draft Environmental Assessment on the Special Purpose Craft- Heavy Weather (SPC-HWX) II Acquisition Program
SEATTLE – The U.S. Coast Guard has announced the availability of the Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) and Overseas Environmental Assessment (OEA) for its proposal to acquire up to six second-generation Special Purpose Craft – Heavy Weather (SPC-HWX) II vessels. The proposal includes actively operating four vessels while maintaining two as maintenance relief hulls, each with an operational lifespan of 25 years.
