Coast Guard Academy Alum set to graduate from NASA Astronaut program

Astronaut Candidate Andre Douglas ‘08 is in the final stretch of more than two years of training to earn his wings from NASA and become eligible for spaceflight. Douglas will join two other CGA alums who served as astronauts, Bruce Melnick ’72 and Daniel Burbank ’85 who is currently a Professor of Practice in the Mechanical Engineering program at the Academy.

Coast Guard repatriates 28 migrants to Dominican Republic, following unlawful migration voyage interdiction in the Mona Passage

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Donald Horsley repatriated 28 migrants to Dominican Republic, Wednesday. The repatriated migrants included two other migrants from a separate case.

Responders conduct successful pollution training, supporting Guam's spill response readiness

SANTA RITA, Guam — Responders and the U.S. Coast Guard held a three-day oil spill response certification course required under the Code of Federal Regulations for First Responder Operations Level Training given at Cabras Marine Guam from Jan. 17 - 19, 2024, focused on operational requirements for responding to pollution spills, particularly with oil spill recovery organizations. "We had the opportunity to take part in and observe their strategy, and they successfully finished the exercise by showcasing their professional knowledge and response skills," stated Lt. j.g. Whip Blacklaw, chief of the Incident Management Division at U.S. Coast Guard Forces Micronesia/Sector Guam.

U.S. Coast Guard to discontinue seasonal sound signals at Umpqua River and Yaquina Bay

The U.S. Coast Guard is set to permanently discontinue the seasonal Sound Signals at Umpqua River South Jetty Sound Signal (LLNR 9247) and Yaquina Bay. The U.S. Coast Guard will cease their use with the conclusion of the 2024 spring installation.

U.S. Coast Guard sails to outer islands of Federated States of Micronesia with needed equipment and supplies

POHNPEI, Federated States of Micronesia — The USCGC Oliver Henry (WPC 1140) crew arrived at Dekhitik Harbor in Pohnpei on Feb. 1 as part of an international effort to deliver essential supplies and equipment to the drought-affected outer islands of Nukuoro and Kapingamarangi Atolls. Due to the El Niño weather phenomenon, these remote communities required immediate assistance, including water purification solutions, to combat the scarcity of potable water.

U.S. Coast Guard supports joint cast and recovery training in Guam

SANTA RITA, Guam — In a demonstration of inter-service cooperation and expertise, the crew of the U.S. Coast Guard Station Apra Harbor's 45-foot Response Boat-Medium supported an intricate cast and recovery training exercise in Apra Harbor on Feb. 1, 2024. This vital training involved collaboration with the U.S. Army Scouts from the 3rd Squadron, 4th U.S. Cavalry Raiders of the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT), 25th Infantry Division, and the U.S. Navy Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25 - the "Island Knights," based at Andersen Air Force Base.

SAN DIEGO – A Coast Guard helicopter aircrew medically evacuates an 88-year-old female passenger from the cruise ship Queen Victoria, located approximately 150 miles west of San Diego, Monday morning.
