U.S. Coast Guard establishes Maritime Nuclear Policy Division

Dec. 17, 2025

The Coast Guard proactively adapts to a rapidly changing world. Advanced technologies, including modern nuclear reactor designs, accelerate and transform the maritime industry. A comprehensive framework of requirements and standards to govern the safe and secure adoption of nuclear technologies is needed to strengthen American national security and enhance economic prosperity.

To meet these needs, the Coast Guard recently announced the establishment of the Maritime Nuclear Policy Division. This new division, created within the Office of Design and Engineering Standards (CG-ENG), supports Coast Guard Force Design 2028 and administration priorities to revitalize American maritime industries and advance emerging technologies. The Maritime Nuclear Policy Division serves as the Coast Guard’s central contact to develop and implement policies governing the safe and secure integration of nuclear technology into the Marine Transportation System. The Maritime Nuclear Policy Division is the Coast Guard’s liaison for industry and interagency partners advancing these efforts to ensure the Service maintains its leadership role in the Marine Transportation System.

The Maritime Nuclear Policy Division will develop domestic and international policy through coordination with federal and international partners, and coordinate with nuclear industry leaders, academia, and national laboratories to stay informed of advancements in reactor technology and maritime applications. The establishment of the Maritime Nuclear Policy Division directly supports the Coast Guard’s leadership role in fostering innovation to ensure the responsible development of advanced nuclear technologies within the maritime sector.

“The Coast Guard must keep pace with maritime industry advancements," said Rear Adm. Wayne R. Arguin, assistant commandant for prevention policy. "The creation of the Maritime Nuclear Policy Division ensures the Coast Guard is fully engaged with stakeholders so we can safely integrate maritime nuclear technology, while also maintaining a security posture through coordination with other agencies. Staying aligned with industry and federal agencies is critical to promote and safeguard the maritime sector.”

Industry representative and agencies interested in Maritime Nuclear activities are encouraged to reach out to the Maritime Nuclear Policy Division at NuclearPolicy@uscg.mil.
