Coast Guard repatriates 12 migrants to Dominican Republic following vessel interdiction off Puerto Rico

The Coast Guard Cutter returned 12 migrants to the Dominican Republic between Thursday and Friday, following the interdiction of an irregular, unlawful migration voyage near Puerto Rico. The cutter Paul Clark crew returned 10 of the migrants to a Dominican Republic Navy vessel, Thursday, while the Coast Guard Cutter Joseph Napier crew repatriated the two remaining migrants from the group to Punta Juanillo, Dominican Republic, Friday afternoon. The interdiction occurred Wednesday night, after the crew of a Customs and Border Protection multi-role enforcement aircraft sighted a grossly overloaded makeshift vessel, approximately 62 nautical miles northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. The cutter Paul Clark arrived on-scene and launched the cutter’s over-the-horizon small boat crew which successfully stopped the suspect vessel.  The cutter crew and embarked all 12 migrants consisting of eight men, two women and two unaccompanied minors, who claimed to be Dominican Republic nationals.

Coast Guard cautions for hazardous marine conditions in U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico due to Invest 94L

The Coast Guard cautions recreational boaters, fishermen, beachgoers and water sports enthusiasts in U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico of potential high-surf and dangerous rip currents associated with tropical wave, Invest 94L, starting Thursday and through the weekend. “We caution people to be mindful and not take this weather disturbance for granted,” said Lt. Cmdr. Nathan Borders, Coast Guard Sector San Juan Command Center chief.  “Before going out on the water, check for the latest weather updates and advisories and heed warning signs at beaches.  Also, we advise people to stay clear of coastal rock formations this weekend as we anticipate dangerous rip currents in the eastern and northern coasts of U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico as AL94 passes through our area.” For Thursday the National Weather Service is advising to expect deteriorating marine conditions due to tropical wave, Invest 94L. Small craft should exercise caution across the northeastern offshore Atlantic waters, late tonight. Life-threatening rip currents are possible in the surf zone particularly northern and eastern Puerto Rico, eastern Vieques, and Culebra. will increase the potential for showers and thunderstorms.
