CORRECTION: Coast Guard releases CERCLA investigation findings from former Buxton Beach Coast Guard facilities

The Coast Guard released the findings Friday of a Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) investigation conducted at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore Park.  Coast Guard Civil Engineering Unit Cleveland initiated the site investigation in August 2023 to identify any contamination resulting from legacy operations that may have been conducted by the Coast Guard at Old Group Cape Hatteras between 1982 and 2013.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — U.S. Coast Guard members and federal, regional, state, local, and industry partners conducted an exercise designed to enhance coordination in response to vessel fires caused by electric vehicle (EV) lithium-ion batteries, Sept. 24-25.

Coast Guard scheduled to set temporary waterway restrictions near Wrightsville Beach

The Coast Guard is scheduled to issue a temporary restriction of recreational and commercial vessel movements during the Swim the Loop and Mott’s Channel Sprint swimming events Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon, in the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) and around Harbor Island near Wrightsville Beach. The Captain of the Port is issuing the temporary restriction during the event to ensure the safety of all participants.

U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy departs Seattle for fall 2024 Arctic deployment

SEATTLE — U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy (WAGB 20) departed Seattle Tuesday, beginning their months-long Arctic deployment. Healy’s earlier science mission was cut short due to an onboard electrical fire. The Healy returned to Seattle for a thorough inspection and repairs. The crew will support scientists conducting three distinct science missions during Healy’s fall 2024 Arctic deployment. Other science of opportunity across a broad spectrum of disciplines will also be supported as time and weather allow.

Coast Guard rescues 14 Haitian migrants left stranded by smugglers on Monito Island, Puerto Rico

The crew of Coast Guard Cutter Joseph Tezanos rescued 14 migrants, Sunday, who were left stranded by smugglers on the uninhabited natural reserve of Monito Island, Puerto Rico, in the Mona Passage. The rescue involved efforts and coordination with Caribbean Border Interagency Group (CBIG) partner agencies and Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources Park Rangers.

Coast Guard offloads $4.3 million in seized cocaine, transfers 2 smugglers to DEA custody in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Joseph Tezanos offloaded 388 pounds (176 kgs) of seized cocaine and transferred custody of two smugglers to DEA Special Agents in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, Sunday. The interdiction is the result of multi-agency efforts in support of the Caribbean Corridor Strike Force, while the seized cocaine is estimated to have a wholesale value of $4.3 million dollars.  The apprehended smugglers are U.S. citizens, who face federal prosecution in Puerto Rico on criminal charges including conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance aboard a vessel subject to the jurisdiction of the United States. The charges carry a minimum sentence of 10 years imprisonment and a maximum sentence of imprisonment for life.  Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Helena B. Daniel and Max Pérez-Bouret, Chief of the Transnational Organized Crime Section are prosecuting the case.

HONOLULU – The crew of Coast Guard Cutter Oliver Berry (WPC 1124) returned to Honolulu Friday after completing a 46-day patrol in Oceania.

MIAMI — The Coast Guard Seventh District disestablished their area command post in response to Hurricane Helene, Tuesday, at Coast Guard Air Station Miami in Opa Locka.

JUNEAU, Alaska – The U.S. Coast Guard located four vessels from the Russian Border Guard and Chinese Coast Guard conducting a joint patrol in the Bering Sea, Saturday.

Coast Guard partners with Tougaloo College to launch College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI) in Jackson, Miss.

The Coast Guard announced a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Tougaloo College on Sept. 18, 2024, marking a significant step in expanding active duty recruitment efforts in Jackson, Mississippi.
