Update to Navigation and Vessel Inspection Circular (NVIC) 7-68, Notes on Inspection and Repair of Steel Hulls

Aug. 22, 2026 | By Assistant Commandant for Prevention Policy (CG-5P)

The Coast Guard has published an update to Navigation and Vessel Inspection Circular (NVIC) 7-68, Notes on Inspection and Repair of Steel Hulls.

Steel-hull construction and repair methods have changed significantly since original publication of this NVIC in 1968.

The revised NVIC includes additional guidance on pitting and corrosion repair and incorporation of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) Recommendation #47 Part B, Ship Repair and Maintenance, as an acceptable standard for ship repair.

The updated NVIC 7-68 (CH-1) can be found on the Coast Guard’s website in the NVIC Library.

Questions regarding this guidance should be directed to the Office of Commercial Vessel Compliance, CG-CVC@uscg.mil.
