As the U.S. Coast Guard prepares for the initial rollout of Navita™ in September 2026, we want to ensure the maritime workforce is fully prepared for the transition. Navita™ is our new digital credentialing system, designed to replace paper-based processes with an easier, more secure online experience. By improving efficiency Navita™ will help reduce delays and get qualified mariners their merchant mariner credential (MMC) faster. Because this represents a significant shift in how you will interact with the Coast Guard, we want you to know exactly what to expect in the weeks leading to the launch.
The most important step to prepare for Navita™ will be understanding the secure sign-in process. To protect user information and provide a secure digital experience, Navita™ uses Login.gov for identity verification. Before accessing Navita™ for the first time, if you do not have an established Login.gov account you will be guided through creating one to verify your identity. In addition, you will create a profile in Navita™. While it may seem redundant to enter information the Coast Guard already has on file, this initial setup is crucial. It ensures your digital profile is accurate, secure, and properly linked to your credentialing record. Once your account is established, that information is saved for all future transactions, dramatically reducing your paperwork moving forward.
It is also important to understand that Navita™ is being rolled out in a phased approach. This is the start of a long-term modernization effort, rather than a one-time change. When Navita™ launches this September, the initial deployment will allow mariners to set up their secure profiles and seamlessly submit both MMC and medical certificate applications online. As development continues post-launch, the Coast Guard will periodically release system updates, expanding Navita™ capabilities into a fully modern system.
While the method for submitting MMC and medical certificate applications is changing to a user-friendly digital format, our standards for safety and credentialing remain exactly the same. The requirements to qualify for your MMC or medical certificate have not changed, and you will continue to receive the same level of oversight and dedicated support.
