Announcement: CG-ENG Policy Letter 01-25: USCG Acceptance of Navigation Lights Meeting American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) Standard ABYC C-5

July 8, 2025

The Coast Guard Office of Design and Engineering Standards has released CG-ENG Policy Letter 01-25, titled: USCG Acceptance of Navigation Lights Meeting American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) Standard ABYC C-5. This policy provides guidance on and authorizes the use of ABYC C-5 for the design, construction, performance, and testing of navigation lights required to be certified by a USCG-recognized independent laboratory.  The standard referenced in Titles 33 and 46 of the CFR, UL 1104, is no longer maintained by UL. Navigation lights that adhere to UL 1104 remain acceptable.

This policy allows existing and new navigation light manufacturers to more easily access and comply with modern standards and provides additional standards for use on vessels subject to Titles 33 and 46.

The full text of the policy letter can be found on CG-ENG’s policy website accessible here:  Office of Design and Engineering Standards (CG-ENG).

Any questions or feedback related to this Policy Letter should be directed to CG-ENG at CGENG@uscg.mil.
