Coast Guard suspends search for missing swimmer off Maui

HONOLULU — The Coast Guard suspended its search at 6 p.m. Monday for a man in the water who went missing off Maui Friday.

Missing is John Weems, 75, who was last seen snorkeling off Kaʻanapali Beach.

In total, Coast Guard crews searched 1,275 square miles for over 77 combined hours.

“Following extensive search efforts carried out alongside our partner agencies, we have made the difficult decision to suspend the search for Mr. Weems,” said Lt. Tyler Peterson, search and rescue mission coordinator, Coast Guard Sector Honolulu. "We extend our deepest condolences to his family and all who are grieving, both near and far.”

Coast Guard search efforts began after Sector Honolulu command center watchstanders received a request for assistance from Maui Fire Department personnel at 6:38 p.m. Friday.

Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and coordinated the launch of a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Maui and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point. The crew of fast response cutter USCGC Oliver Berry (WPC 1124) also joined the search Saturday.
