MIAMI — A Coast Guard Station Miami Beach boat crew rescued three people, Wednesday, after their 17-foot vessel capsized outside Government Cut.
Two of the survivors were found on top of the vessel and one in the water clinging to it. All were reportedly wearing life jackets. The boat crew brought all three men aboard the response boat and transported them to Jungle Island Marina.
Coast Guard Sector Miami command center watchstanders received a mayday call on channel 16 around 2 a.m.
"Life jackets and a reliable radio are lifesavers," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Alain Carvajal. "When their vessel overturned unexpectedly, the three men were kept afloat by their life jackets and were able to call for help using their radio. The unpredictability of being on the water means things can change in an instant. Always wear a life jacket and ensure you have a working radio – they could be the difference between life and death."
Commercial salvage recovered the vessel.
On-scene weather conditions were reported to be 8-mph winds with 1-foot seas.
