WASHINGTON — The Coast Guard awarded a $51 million contract on Aug. 25, 2026 to renovate Chase Hall Annex A at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut.
The contract awarded to The Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. of New Haven, Connecticut, will repair the oldest and most historic portions of Chase Hall to improve quality of life for cadets and support the Academy’s long-term mission.
The project, expected to be completed in August 2028, will include:
- Restoration of the building’s exterior envelope.
- Refurbishment of interior spaces, including corridors, offices, support and utility rooms.
- Refurbishment of cadet and duty berthing rooms, bathrooms and other service areas.
- Abatement of asbestos-containing materials and lead-based paint in areas disturbed by construction.
- Installation of a fire detection and alarm system, replacement of the fire protection sprinkler system.
- Modernization of communications and electrical systems, and renovation of the storage attic.
- Accessibility upgrades to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements for occupancy and enhance lobby access for visiting family members.
- Renovation of the lobby; moisture intrusion mitigation through improvements to exterior masonry and installation of new windows; and installation of a new heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system.
The Chase Hall Annex A renovation is part of a larger modernization effort at the Academy, which includes construction of a new academic science, technology, engineering and math building and an aquatics center. These infrastructure improvements are part of a critical investment to support the development of future Coast Guard leaders and ensure safe, reliable and resilient facilities.
“Renovating Chase Hall Annex A is an investment in our cadets and in the future of the Coast Guard,” said Rear Adm. Greg Rothrock, Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. “This project will preserve one of the academy’s most historic facilities in support of our mission to train the next generation of Coast Guard leaders.”

Founded in 1876, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy is one of five federal service academies and an elite professional college that educates future leaders of America’s multi-mission maritime military force. Each year, approximately 250 graduates are commissioned as Coast Guard officers to help ensure the safety, security and stewardship of U.S. waters.
