BOSTON — The U.S. Coast Guard Northeast District held a change of command ceremony Thursday at Faneuil Hall, where Rear Adm. Matthew Lake assumed the duties and responsibilities of district commander from Rear Adm. Michael Platt.
Vice Adm. Jo-Ann Burdian, Commander, Coast Guard Atlantic Area, presided over the time-honored military event, which marks the formal transfer of authority and ensures the continuity of leadership.
“Serving in my hometown of Boston over the last two years, particularly during Sail 250, has been the highlight of my career,” said Platt. “It has been an absolute privilege to lead the dedicated crews of the Northeast District. I know they will continue to thrive under Rear Adm. Lake’s leadership.”
Rear Adm. Lake assumes command after serving as the Coast Guard’s Assistant Commandant for Resources and Chief Financial Officer. A 1995 Coast Guard Academy graduate, Lake’s 31-year career includes extensive afloat, logistics, and acquisition experience, notably leading cutter and boat modernization programs valued at over $30 billion.
“I am deeply honored to assume command of the Northeast District and to lead such an outstanding team of professionals,” said Lake. “We remain fully committed to protecting our mariners, securing our vital waterways, and maintaining our steadfast readiness across New England, New York and Northern New Jersey.”
The Northeast District comprises more than 12,000 active-duty, reserve, civilian and Auxiliary personnel spanning eight states and over 2,000 miles of coastline from the U.S.-Canada border to Northern New Jersey.
