HONOLULU – The Coast Guard rescued two men after a 10-foot catamaran capsized approximately 11 miles off Haleiwa Tuesday.
A Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules airplane crew and MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Barbers Point located the men in the water with the capsized vessel, safely hoisted them, and brought them ashore to the air station in Kapolei.
Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Center watchstanders received a personal locator beacon alert at 11:52 a.m., indicating a position along the north side of Oahu.
Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast, and the airplane and helicopter crews already airborne at the time diverted to assist.
At 1:45 p.m., the crews located the capsized vessel and hoisted the two men from the water. There are no reported injuries.
“Registering your personal locator beacon can mean the difference between a quick rescue and an extended search at sea," said Petty Officer 1st Class Aaron Lenk, command duty officer, Oceania District. "It is imperative to register your PLB’s and Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacons, or risk delaying critical response times.”
