Coast Guard suspends search for missing person near Biscayne Bay

MIAMI – The Coast Guard suspended its search, Saturday, near Biscayne Bay after an individual was recovered matching the description of the missing person.  

Missing was 23-year-old Akin Liverpool, who was reportedly last seen aboard a vessel transiting Biscayne Bay. 

Good Samaritans located a person in the water south of Brickell Key, Sunday, at approximately 11 a.m. A Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office marine unit recovered the individual, who was later identified as the missing person.  

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Liverpool as they navigate this incredibly difficult time,” said Cmdr. Francis Varrichio, the Sector Miami search and rescue mission coordinator for the case. “We are deeply appreciative of our local partners for their support and assistance throughout the search.” 

Coast Guard Sector Miami watchstanders received notification, Friday, of a missing person last seen aboard a 39-foot cabin cruiser transiting Biscayne Bay from Hobie Beach towards the Miami River, reportedly wearing all black clothing. Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and directed the launch surface and air crews to conduct searches alongside local partner agencies. 

Coast Guard and partner agency crews searched by air and sea, covering approximately 529 square miles. Crews utilized night-vision equipment and conducted continuous overnight searches.
