U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Southwest Phone: 206-815-6689

LOS ANGELES — The Coast Guard suspended its search Wednesday evening, pending further developments, for a 5-year-old girl who was reportedly swept out to sea near Laguna Beach.

At approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday, Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach watch standers received a report from Laguna Beach Fire Department dispatch that a child had been struck by a wave and swept into rough surf. Two other people who were with her, one child and one adult, made it safely back to shore after bystanders intervened to rescue them from the sea.

Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach watch standers directed the launch of Station Los Angeles-Long Beach 45-foot Response Boat-Medium, Air Station San Diego MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, Air Station Ventura MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and Coast Guard Cutter Halibut from Marina Del Rey to assist in the search effort.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the child’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” said Capt. Stacey Crecy, commander of Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach. “Suspending a search is an extremely difficult decision. We launched assets and responded as quickly as possible, continuously searching throughout the night and until sunset on June 10, 2026. We worked hand-in-hand with first responders in Laguna Beach to carry out a coordinated and thorough search of the area.”

Responding crews searched for more than 30 hours and covered more than 90 square miles.
