OCEAN CITY, Md. – U.S. Coast Guard Station Ocean City crew members hosted a free community event with partner agencies in Ocean City, Maryland, Saturday.
Three partner agencies attended the event, offering an opportunity for members of the community to meet with first responders who also provided safe boating tips and career information to the public.
“The main role of Station Ocean City is search and rescue and law enforcement,” said U.S Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Zachary Dale, a boatswain’s mate at Station Ocean City. “We patrol the bays during the summertime and wintertime, just making sure everybody’s safe out on the water.”
The community event was available to all ages and included free tours of the 45-foot Response Boat – Medium, 27-foot Special Purpose Craft - Shallow Water II and the Maryland State Police helicopter.
The Coast Guard Auxiliary attended the event along with the three partner agencies.
“We come out for major events that are water based, like the air show next week, said Maryland State Police Sgt. Matthew Huntington, underwater recovery team. “The underwater recovery team is a secondary duty that we have with normal patrol. We also do recovery: vehicle recovery, body recovery, evidence recovery, guns, knives, anything along those lines. Anything that basically would be a crime scene underwater.”
These events help promote understanding between the public and first responders, providing an opportunity to share about their day-to-day operations and increase awareness of who is there to help during emergencies.
The following organizations attended Saturday’s community event:
- U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary crew members
- Maryland State Police
- Ocean City Police
- Worcester County Sheriff’s Office
-USCG-
