Coast Guard, partners respond to oil spill at Ala Wai Harbor in Honolulu

Coast Guard Oceania District External Affairs - (808) 265-7748

HONOLULU — The Coast Guard, the Hawaii Department of Health Hazard Evaluation & Emergency Response Office, and the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation are responding to an oil spill at Ala Wai Harbor in Honolulu on Monday.

Pollution responders with Pacific Environmental Corporation (PENCO) are on scene recovering red dye diesel from the water. So far, crews deployed 23 bags of sorbent pads and sweep to contain the spill and recover diesel.

The amount and source of the spill are unknown and under investigation. There have been no reports of injuries or wildlife impacts.

Coast Guard Sector Honolulu command center watchstanders received a call at 8:39 p.m. on Sunday reporting a diesel fuel spill near the docks at the north side of the harbor.

After deploying a federal on-scene coordinator representative and environmental response investigators to the harbor, the Coast Guard assessed the incident and federalized the oil spill response. PENCO responders arrived on scene and began response operations at around 3 a.m. on Monday.

Members of the public are requested to maintain a safe distance from the response area. Boom will be in place from 4:30 p.m. Monday to 7:30 a.m. Thursday for mitigation efforts. All vessels within the boom will need to remain in place until the boom is removed.
