MEDIA RELEASE: Coast Guard announces Operation RENEW 2026 to maintain heating oil supply

Northeast District

BOSTON – In preparation for the 2026 winter season, the Coast Guard Northeast District has launched Operation Reliable Energy for Northeast Winters 2026, emphasizing the critical role of maintaining the flow of heating oil to the Northeast region.

This operation is pivotal for the well-being of over 33 million residents, as the Northeast consumes 85% of the nation's heating oil, with 90% of this delivered via Coast Guard-maintained waterways.

With some assets undergoing maintenance and upgrades, the Coast Guard has strategically adjusted its operations to focus resources where they are most needed. The highest priority mission will be on maintaining an uninterrupted supply of heating oil.

"Operation RENEW 2026 is about keeping Northeast communities safe and secure during the toughest winter months. Every year, the Coast Guard works to ensure that heating fuel, food, and medical supplies can reach households and businesses when ice hinders waterways. Eighty-five percent of the nation’s heating oil is used in the Northeast, and most of it travels on waterways we maintain," said Rear Adm. Michael E. Platt, commander Northeast District. “Our crews, cutters, and aircraft are ready to respond, ensuring the flow of commerce and communities are supported. Operation RENEW is more than icebreaking; it is about safeguarding lives, supporting local economies, and ensuring families are prepared for the Northeast’s harsh winters.”

As Operation RENEW 2026 progresses, the Coast Guard will continue to adapt its strategies to meet the demands of the winter season, ensuring that the Northeast's maritime transportation system remains robust and responsive to the needs of the communities it serves.
