Coast Guard, partner agencies, good Samaritans respond to boat fire near Honolulu

Coast Guard Oceania District External Affairs - (808) 265-7748

HONOLULU – The Coast Guard, Honolulu Fire Department, and good Samaritans responded to a boat fire near Ala Wai Harbor in Honolulu Wednesday.

Coast Guard Sector Honolulu received a notification at 7 a.m. that the Kamakahonu, a 29-foot uninspected passenger vessel with six people aboard, had an engine fire just east of the harbor entrance channel.

Sector Honolulu contacted the nearby crew of the uninspected passenger vessel Makai and directed the launch of a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Honolulu.

The Kamakahonu’s crew dropped anchor and good Samaritans aboard the Makai evacuated all six people from the Kamakahonu.

Station Honolulu crew members arrived on scene at 7:30 a.m. and began firefighting efforts using fire extinguishers and a P-6 dewatering pump. A Honolulu Fire Department rescue boat crew arrived, boarded the Kamakahonu, and used the Station Honolulu boat crew’s P-6 pump to extinguish the fire in the engine space.

After the fire was extinguished, the Makai crew towed the vessel into Ala Wai Harbor under the escort of the Honolulu Fire Department. No injuries were reported.

“This case highlights the value of strong teamwork with partners like the Honolulu Fire Department,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Ethan Chandler, coxswain of the Station Honolulu boat crew. “The swift actions of the fire rescue boat crew and the good Samaritans were key to quickly extinguishing the fire and keeping everyone safe.”
