MEDIA ADVISORY: U.S. Coast Guard Barque Eagle ride-in opportunity into San Pedro Harbor, Friday, Aug. 1

LOS ANGELES — U.S. Coast Guard Barque Eagle (WIX 327), America’s Tall Ship, will visit Los Angeles on Friday, Aug. 1, ahead of the Coast Guard’s 235th birthday.

Media representatives are invited to ride aboard Eagle as she transits into San Pedro Harbor.  Please RSVP to the U.S. Coast Guard Southwest District’s Los Angeles-Long Beach Public Affairs Office at padetlalb@uscg.mil no later than 11 a.m. on July 31.  Spots are limited and will be first come, first served.

Participants will meet at 22nd and Miner streets (112-122 W. 22nd St., San Pedro, CA 90731) at 7 a.m., ride out to Eagle on a Coast Guard station boat and board the tall ship via an accommodation ladder (equivalent to one flight of stairs). Eagle will be mooring at 50/51 in San Pedro’s Outer Harbor, near 3600 Miner Street, San Pedro, CA, Guests can expect to disembark around 11 a.m.

Lifejackets will be provided to all guests. Close-toed shoes are mandatory.

Los Angeles marks the 10th port call of Eagle’s 14-week journey along the West Coast. She was in Los Angeles briefly in May, which was the first time she visited since 2008.

At 295 feet in length, Eagle is the largest tall ship flying the stars and stripes and the only active square-rigger in United States government service. Constructed in 1936 by the Blohm and Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, Germany, and originally commissioned as the Horst Wessel by the German Navy, Eagle was a war reparation for the United States following World War II. Eagle is a three-masted barque with more than 22,300 square feet of sail and six miles of rigging.  Eagle has served as a classroom at sea and a leadership laboratory for future Coast Guard officers since 1946, offering an at-sea leadership and professional development experience as part of the Coast Guard Academy’s curriculum.

The Coast Guard’s 235th birthday is on Aug. 4. The Eagle is scheduled to depart Los Angeles that morning.
