HOUSTON — The crew of Coast Guard Cutter Reliance (WMEC 615), a 210-foot medium endurance cutter homeported in Pensacola, Florida, will visit Galveston, Texas and be open to visitors on July 4 and July 5.
The Reliance will moor at Pier 21 near 2100 Harborside Dr, Galveston, TX and will be open for public tours from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and from 10 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
No tickets are required and tours are free of charge.
“We invite everyone to come aboard Reliance and learn more about the dynamic missions we carry out,” said Ensign Sarah Kaleta, public affairs officer of Reliance. “Our cutter has a unique bond with the Houston-Galveston area, and we’re looking forward to reconnecting with the community.”
Built at Todd Shipyards in Houston and commissioned in Galveston in 1964, the Reliance was the first built in the Reliance-class of vessels in the Coast Guard’s medium endurance cutter fleet. The Reliance was homeported in Corpus Christi, Texas, until 1975, and has since been homeported in Yorktown, Virginia, Port Canaveral, Florida, New Castle, New Hampshire, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Kittery, Maine, and Pensacola.
The Reliance crew patrols the Atlantic Ocean to the eastern coast of Canada to the northern tip of South America. The 67-member crew routinely enforces laws and treaties, and conducts search and rescue, migrant interdiction, drug interdiction and safety inspections.
