Coast Guard medevacs man 185 miles offshore San Francisco

ALAMEDA, Calif. — The Coast Guard completed the medevac of an ailing man from a vessel 185 miles offshore San Francisco, Tuesday evening.

District 11 watchstanders received a call at approximately 10 a.m. Sunday, from the captain of the cargo ship Aetos reporting that a 40-year-old crew member aboard was exhibiting symptoms of appendicitis approximately 820 miles offshore.

Watchstanders advised the captain to meet at a rendezvous point and coordinated the launch of a HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Ventura. The aircrew transited to Air Station San Francisco to refuel and began their flight to the Aetos approximately 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The aircrew arrived on scene 185 miles offshore San Francisco at approximately 7 p.m., hoisted the patient into the helicopter and began their transit to San Francisco International Airport.

The aircrew landed at SFO and transferred the patient to awaiting emergency medical services at approximately 9 p.m., Tuesday.
