The Coast Guard and partner agencies continue to respond to a diesel fuel spill near the East Harbor Marina in the Patapsco River, Thursday afternoon.
Approximately 18,000 gallons of an oily-water mixture has been collected by skimmers and 400 gallons of recoverable fuel has been collected by sorbent material as cleanup efforts continue.
“The Coast Guard and all other responding agencies are dedicated to a fast, safe, and thorough cleanup,” said Cmdr. Roberto Concepcion, Sector Maryland - National Capital Region Chief of Response. “With continued cooperation and transparency from Johns Hopkins and all responding parties, we are able to facilitate a more effective response, minimize environmental impact, and protect the health and safety of the surrounding communities.”
Environmental specialists from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, in collaboration with Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research and the National Aquarium, are actively assessing and managing impacts to waterfowl and marine life in the affected area.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
