MIAMI — The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Margaret Norvell rescued a mariner in distress, Friday, after his vessel capsized approximately eight miles northwest of Freeport, Bahamas.
The 23-year-old man was transported to Bahamian authorities in Freeport with no reported injuries.
A friend of the mariner called Coast Guard Seventh District watchstanders at 9:10 p.m., Thursday, to report him overdue on his voyage from Lantana, Florida to Freeport, Bahamas.
Watchstanders also coordinated the launch of an Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircrew.
“This rescue demonstrated an efficient, rapid multi-asset approach to locate, identify, and assist the survivor in a timely manner,” said Lt. Cmdr. Charles Totten, commanding officer of the Coast Guard Cutter Margaret Norvell. “Our flight crews, watchstanders, and boat crews are prepared day and night to answer the call for help and thanks to everyone’s efforts we were able to get on scene and save a life.”
