HONOLULU – The Coast Guard medevaced an ailing man from a cruise ship 50 miles offshore Oahu Tuesday.

Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu watchstanders received a notification at 10 a.m. Monday from the senior doctor aboard the Zaandam, a Holland America Line cruise ship, requesting a medevac for a 32-year-old man experiencing symptoms of a stroke approximately 330 miles northeast of Oahu. Watchstanders consulted with the duty flight surgeon, who recommended a medevac.

At 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and an HC-130 Hercules airplane crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point rendezvoused with the Zaandam about 50 miles east of Kaneohe, Hawaii.

The helicopter crew hoisted the ailing man and a nurse from the Zaandam to provide in-flight care. The crew then transported the patient to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu in reportedly stable condition.
