PHOTO RELEASE: Coast Guard commissions Marine Safety Unit Coram

CORAM, NY — The Coast Guard commissioned Marine Safety Unit (MSU) Coram Friday, marking a significant enhancement in maritime safety and security operations.

This transition from Marine Safety Detachments (MSDs) to MSUs allows for improved command and control capabilities and resource allocation.

Capt. Elisa Garrity, the Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound commander, presided over the ceremony, where Lt. Pablo Ortiz took command as the first commanding officer of the newly commissioned Marine Safety Unit Coram.

“This transition represents a significant step forward in our mission to protect the maritime community of Long Island,” said Ortiz. “Our mission extends beyond the waters we patrol and into the heart of our community. By building strong relationships with local partners and embracing the rich maritime heritage of Long Island, we are dedicated to enhancing safety and security. We believe that forging strong connections within the Long Island community is essential to our mission. By working closely with residents, businesses and maritime organizations, we aim to ensure that every journey on our waters is as secure as it is enjoyable. Together we’re not just safeguarding lives, but also building a resilient maritime community.”

In October of 2023, the Coast Guard commandant approved a request to convert 18 detached units to junior command units. The selected units were identified by the Junior Command Opportunities Work Group and selected based on a variety of factors such as mission complexity, distance from other Coast Guard units, and the personnel allowance list. The request, drafted by the Coast Guard Deputy Commandant for Operations, was in response to a research and development study that identified a need for junior command opportunities in marine safety.

MSU Coram is a Coast Guard unit responsible for the safety and security of the Long Island region's maritime environment, with 14 active duty, four reserve and three civilian personnel. The unit's primary missions include port safety and security, environmental protection, and marine inspections and investigations. MSU Coram maintains the security of ports and waterways by enforcing regulations, conducting inspections and responding to potential environmental threats. Their environmental protection efforts involve monitoring and responding to oil spills, hazardous materials incidents and other environmental challenges that affect the marine ecosystem.
