District 11

SAN DIEGO — The U.S. Coast Guard medically evacuates a 60-year-old male passenger from a fishing vessel located approximately 115 miles West of San Diego, Tuesday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector San Diego Joint Harbor Operations Center received notification from a crewmember aboard the Top Gun 80 at approximately 9:47 a.m., reporting that a passenger was having a seizure and drifting in and out of consciousness.

Sector San Diego assumed search and rescue mission coordinator responsibilities, initiated the medevac protocol, and consulted with the duty flight surgeon. It was determined that a medical evacuation to a higher level of care was necessary. A San Diego Fire STAR Medic was requested to accompany the Coast Guard rescue swimmer.

The Air Station San Diego Jayhawk aircrew launched at approximately 10:45 a.m. local with an estimated arrival time of 43 minutes. Upon arrival, the crew successfully hoisted the patient and transferred him to awaiting emergency medical services at Sector San Diego.

The patient was in stable condition and is being taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for further evaluation.
