A Coast Guard helicopter aircrew medically evacuates two passengers off a cruise ship near San Diego

SAN DIEGO — A Coast Guard helicopter aircrew medically evacuates a 56-year-old male passenger and a 77-year-old male passenger from a cruise ship approximately 13 miles off the coast of San Diego Tuesday morning.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector San Diego Joint Harbor Operations Center received a distress call from the cruise ship, Navigator of the Seas, at approximately 7:50 a.m., reporting two passengers experiencing medical emergencies. Sector San Diego launched an Air Station Jayhawk Helicopter crew with an embarked Specialized Trauma Assistance Team (STAR) medic to rendezvous with the vessel and retrieve the two passengers.

Once on scene, the aircrew successfully hoisted and transferred both passengers to UCSD Hillcrest in stable condition.
