JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Coast Guard rescued a man aboard a sailing vessel, Thursday, after their vessel began taking on water near Ponce Inlet.

Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville watchstanders received a notification at 9:43 p.m., from the operator of the Caprese, a 39-foot sailing vessel, stating their vessel was aground, taking on water, and in danger of capsizing in the Halifax River.

Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast notifying all mariners in the area of the distress and directed the launch of a Coast Guard Station Ponce De Leon Inlet boat crew to respond. On scene weather conditions were reportedly 22 mph winds and 5 to 6-foot seas.

The boat crew arrived on scene and safely brought the individual on board with no reported injuries.

The owner of the vessel will coordinate salvage and a safety marine information bulletin has been issued warning mariners of the potential hazard to navigation.

"Marine conditions throughout Northeast Florida will continue to be extremely hazardous throughout the weekend,” said Cmdr. Nick Barrow, Sector Jacksonville search and rescue mission coordinator. “All mariners are strongly encouraged to monitor weather forecasts and warnings, and take reasonable safety precautions to protect life and property.”
