NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Academy recently partnered with the University of Connecticut on a new STEM pilot program. The goal of the initiative is to recruit, accept, retain and graduate women and underrepresented minorities from the USCGA applicant pool into the Coast Guard’s engineering, science and cyber workforce.
The program will bring up to 12 cadet candidates to UCONN’s Avery Point campus for a year of study before joining the incoming class at the Academy. Successful completion of the program may lead to students academically being considered sophomores and being offered broader coursework during their four years as a cadet at the Academy.
Program participants reside at the Academy, receive basic pay and allowances and are transported to the Avery Point waterfront campus overlooking Long Island Sound in Groton, Conn.
